Restring Tent Pole – Do It Yourself!
Can you easily restring tent pole? For the longest time I’ve been debating if I need a new tent. At it’s core I have a pretty nice two person Eureka tent that I’ve had for many years. Everything is in great condition except the shock cord on the poles. Unfortunately that means every time you set it up the poles won’t pull together and it’s very frustrating.
After looking at new tents, which would cost between $200 – $400 dollars, I decided that wasn’t the route I wanted to go. It’s hard to justify $200+ when the only problem is lose elastic. Plus what was I going to do with this tent, throw it away?
Restring Tent Pole
With all that being said, not buying a new tent was the best decision I ever made. Buying new shock cord only cost me $1 dollar and REI knew exactly the size cord I needed. If you are going to restring tent pole, make sure you measure the size of the cord first. Mine was less than 1/8 inches. Once you’re home the whole thing takes about 30 minutes with the materials listed below. Enjoy this DIY project, give your tent some love, and sleep easy knowing you saved at least $200 dollars.
- 20ft of shock cord: cut in half, one of each pole
- Scissors / Knife: to cut the old line
- Bent paper clip: to pull out the old cord on the end poles
